Themes

A note on our “Themes”:

To make this unique collection of essays, research reports, and personal reflections more navigable for our readers, we have sorted our content into a few broad themes, as well as, for readers of Mandarin, a diverse collection of Chinese-language pieces.

That said, we realize a single piece rarely (if ever) falls neatly into one of these categories. Labor relations between Chinese managers and local workers are often tinged by racial and cultural undertones and misunderstandings. Political decisions and economic investment are inextricable. Compliance with environmental laws often has as much to do with cultural norms as it does with the policies themselves.

So, as you peruse this site, keep that in mind: rather than taking our categories categorically, use them as general guidelines.
